Commisioned by the 1993 Peterborough Cathedral Festival with financial help from the the Eastern Orchestral Board. Part of it was first performed by Ann Mackay with the European Community Chamber Orchestra, directed by Eivind Aadland in Peterborough Cathedral on 10 July, 1993. The first complete performance was given by Penelope Walmisley-Clarke with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jerzy Maksymiuk in the Concert Hall, Broadcasting House, Queen Margaret Drive Glasgow on 17 September 1993. This recording was broadcast on Radio 3 on 2 August 1994.

A reworking for strings of the Hymn that forms the last movement of Dalby¹s Cantata: John Clare’s Vision. It was in this form that the movement was heard at the first performance of part of the Cantata in Peterborough Cathedral in 1993.
