Frank Stiles
Composer
FRANK STILES was born in London on 2nd April 1924. He studied composition at the Guildhall School of Music, London and later at the Paris Conservatoire. He also studied the viola with Winifred Copperwheat, one of Lionel Tertis’ star pupils, and was for many years a professional viola player during which time he played in all the major orchestras and under many world famous conductors; to this he attributes his practical knowledge of string technique and orchestration.
Among Frank’s most recent work, Fantasia for 12 Violas, written for a memorial concert to Harry Danks, was performed on the Isle of Man at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Festival in 2003.
His third Sonata for Viola and Piano was recently completed for Takashi Kikuchi, Japanese Viola virtuoso.
His works cover a wide field and have been performed and broadcast world wide.
