The King’s Singers

Programme Note
Grammy award-winning and internationally acclaimed, The King’s Singers have set the gold standard in a cappella classical singing on the world’s greatest stages for over 55 years. In their debut performance at Ronnie Scott’s they bring a wonderfully apt programme – ‘Let’s Misbehave’.

The group describe this programme in the following way: “In cities all over the world, magic has happened when musicians have broken rules, taken risks and pushed boundaries. In this experimental space, some of the greatest songs in history have come into existence. And it’s this place that we want to conjure up in Let’s Misbehave.

As a vocal group sitting on the boundary line between different musical worlds, we invite you to the perfect setting for this programme, as we honour some of the great singers, players, songwriters and arrangers from the world of jazz. We’re shaping this cabaret-style performance as a world tour, looking at how these musical rule-breakers have let experimentation take them somewhere new, transgressive, and magical”.

Music will include especially arranged works by Jacob Collier, Randy Newman, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and more.

Ophelia Gordon – piano

Programme Note
British pianist Ophelia Gordon makes a landmark appearance at Ronnie Scott’s, presenting a bold and boundary-breaking recital rooted in her acclaimed debut album Kapustin: Between the Lines, alongside early previews of works from her forthcoming second recording project.

Ophelia Gordon’s artistry inhabits the space “between the lines” of musical convention – where classical precision meets the rhythmic vitality of jazz. Her playing has earned glowing praise from critics: “Her ‘Manteca’ Paraphrase exudes a panache of which Dizzy Gillespie would surely have approved” noted GRAMOPHONE, while BBC Music Magazine wrote, “She really knows how to make Kapustin’s melodic lines and rhythms swing”.

On stage, Gordon transforms Ukrainian pianist Nikolai Kapustin’s vivid fusion of genres into an electrifying experience, revealing both the technical brilliance and expressive nuance of these scores. Reviewers have described her debut as “frankly stunning”, celebrating her capacity to navigate complex rhythmic terrain with fluidity and flair.

This performance will present a rich selection from Kapustin: Between the Lines, from vibrant concert etudes and jazz-infused preludes to sweeping paraphrases, all infused with Gordon’s signature blend of rigour and spontaneity. In addition, she introduces new repertoire destined for her next album, offering a glimpse into the future of her artistic journey.

Prepare for a programme that defies categorisation, bridges musical worlds, and invites listeners to experience piano music with fresh ears.
