Pat Hanchet

composer, educator, musician

About me
I am a composer who likes to write in a variety of styles and am also an educator who produces teaching material. I can provide both ready made compositions and new commissions, as well as visual teaching aids. Now in retirement from institutional teaching, I teach strings and composition at home, and also play strings with local groups.

I am a member of SAM (Sound and Music), CoMA (Contemporary Music for All), ChaCoCo (a small composers' group which met up in Durham) and the Norwich Philharmonic Society. I founded the Norfolk Composers Group in October 2011. We held our first concert in Norwich in June 2012 and are planning more next summer and beyond, throughout Norfolk. As a member of the ISM, I was Committee member, Secretary, and Chairman of the Norwich Centre for many years. I am listed within the Performers and Composers section as a composer.
I have a BA Honours degree in Music and a Diploma in Education, both from the University of Durham.

BIOGRAPHY
Family
Pat had a musical childhood, which included a large household  singing in harmony while doing the chores. Her own sons  play piano/keyboards in their own very different ways.
College
After a gap year in Germany, she took a BA Honours degree in Music (where she chose to present a portfolio of substantial original compositions rather than a dissertation) and a Diploma in Education, both from the University of Durham.
Composing
Her compositions  range from vocal to instrumental to electronic, from traditional to unconventional, from solo to choir with orchestra, from easy pieces for beginners to music for experienced performers. A CD shows a selection of widely varying pieces. See  separate lists of works.
Teaching
Over the years, she has taught music to a variety of people, from pre-schoolers  to adults, and from private pupils to school and college classes. Her school pupils were winners and runners up in the regional and national composition competitions promoted by Record Tokens.
She  now teaches strings and composition at home.
Playing
Nowadays, Pat  plays mainly violin and viola in local orchestras and string quartets as well as for choral societies. She  accompanies her own pupils on the piano.
Early Music
She was once involved in the manufacture of early wind instruments and toured Europe with an early music group playing Medieval and Renaissance winds and strings under the auspices of the European Union.  She has also made a study of authentic Baroque string playing.

PERFORMANCES AND REVIEWS OF PAT'S MUSIC

1990  "Elegy" for cello and piano, based on a tone row. Competition runner-up.

1998 "Five Songs of Ariel and Caliban" for SATB Choir and Strings performed by Bungay Choral Society, (with very favourable press review). combining contemporary harmony and sound effects with earlier styles.

REVIEW  Beccles and Bungay Journal, April 21 2000
"Songs of Ariel and Caliban"

Concert first proves premier performance.
" . . . The work certainly caught the threatening atmosphere of The Tempest, with much staccato work, but ensemble and choir worked harmoniously together, and the work, certainly something very different for the society, retained the interest of the audience throughout. It is one which will no doubt be heard again at other concerts".
Terry Reeve

2001 "Dark Fantasy", comprising three songs, with original words and music. It has elements of mystery and magic, and includes environmental issues. It can be performed by SSAA, SSAB, or SATB, with or without simple instrumental parts. All three songs build up the voices in layers, and the whole cycle can be quickly learned in one session.

REVIEW  SATIPS Independent Prep. Schools Magazine
"Dark Fantasy"

This is a competition-winning piece containing three songs of increasing difficulty. There are optional parts for pitched and unpitched instruments. The first song, Hawks and Hounds, has an environmental text and looks fun. Its ostinato figures could be easily taught to any group. The careful instrumentation and dynamics add much to the sense of foreboding as does the change to the minor key half-way through. The second song is a dirge and builds up to a large climax before fading away. It has two independent melodies, an ostinato and a part for a second soprano in parallel fifths. Though more complex than the first, the melodic writing should come quite easily. The impetus for the final song is a battle between 3/4 and 6/8 rhythms set over a drum ostinato. As it progresses, the material becomes more complex. The overall effect is exciting and this should prove a good challenge for an able choir.
Alan Childs

2002   "The Only Blonde in the World" (polytonal and for flexible instrumentation) was short-listed for the CoMA/Liverpool Tate competition, for which there were over 80 entries).  It was later workshopped and recorded at the CoMA Summer School in 2002. It was then selected for performance in London by the London Chamber Group Wind Quintet at a "Music Party" in 2003.

2004 "Glass & Steel" (a miniature electro-acoustic piece). was accepted by the 60X60 project in New York in 2004 and was publicly aired in the UK Mix at the Digital Music Research Network conference in Leeds in 2007. It also made the Order of Magnitude Dance Mix and was broadcast in the USA on the Martian Gardens contemporary music radio show in August 2007. It has since been played at events in Russia and Canada. The track and CD are both available on iTunes and 'CD Baby'.
2007 "Stop Daydreaming" (a 'duet' for solo bassoon) was performed by Robert Howard at the Prescot Festival in June 2007, and performed again in 2011 (arranged for Fiona Linane on clarinet) at St Chad’s in Durham.

EDUCATIONAL PRODUCTS

Octave Scale Builder

(see below for purchase information)

The Octave Scale Builder is a double sided resource printed on 160 weight card in durable, wipe-clean and colour-enhancing 2 x 80 micron laminate for added value. Suitable for any instrument or for general theory.
It is a stunning visual aid showing structure of major and minor scales on side one and and the four other most common octave modes on side two, all at a glance. Normally this information would have to be extracted from various sources.
Side one is particularly useful for Grade 3 theory and above, though the major scale layout is useful almost from the start. Practical music examinations are now tending to include the option of all three forms of minor scale (Natural, Melodic and Harmonic).
Side two is particularly useful for students of Jazz, Folk and Early music. Both sides would be useful for GCSE groups, either needing basic theory or wanting to explore the modes on side two in their composition projects.
It can also be used for teaching intervals, with perfect intervals in white, major intervals in red and minor intervals in blue. There is also an augmented interval in the Lydian mode shown in yellow.

The two sides could be displayed together on the wall for reference, or they could be handed out as required.

Hanchet's Handy Finger Patterns for Violin and Viola

(see below for purchase information)

Just as guitarists and wind players have books of fingering charts, this is a resource for violinists and violists which has been very popular with adult beginners and older children.
The 16 common finger patterns for each string are printed on A4 card (colour-coded C purple, G green, D red, A blue and E yellow), with their pitch names.  On the reverse, is information about the Major and Minor keys in which these notes are normally used.
Some finger patterns show more than one appropriate Major or Minor key, and where necessary, enharmonic options are shown such as Ab/G♯.
Option A) Leave in this format with five double-sided sheets (one for each string) plus pages for Introduction, 'How to Use', Footnote, 'Beyond the Charts' and Outer Covers.
Option B) Cut along the dotted lines to convert each page into four A6 pages showing families of finger patterns.
Option C) Cut these further into 80 little 1" x 4" interchangeable individual fingering charts, placing the patterns to be learnt or revised to the front, or selecting two or three patterns for scale practice or improvisation.
Two binding rings are included in the pack. They can simply be used to hold the pages together, or they can be opened up to allow removal and reorganisation of the pages.

CLICK ON THE LINK TO VIEW A  low resolution example of both sides of one of the finger patterns on the D string in option C
