Edinburgh Flute Course

Lake Placid Summer School

 

Biography
David Nicholson was born and educated in Newcastle upon Tyne, and studied the flute with Geoffrey Gilbert at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he was a medallist in the final examinations.
He also studied with Jean-Pierre Rampal in France, and had some lessons from, and sttended master classes with, Marcel Moyse.  He is one of the founders of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, which during its 26 seasons of existence, with David as principal flute, has won a very considerable world-wide reputation, recording more than 130 CDs.
David has been a frequent soloist with the orchestra, playing Bach, Vivaldi, Stamitz, Mozart, Nielsen and he premiered and recorded the Concerto written for him by  Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.  He has also appeared as a concerto partner in double concertos with Jean-Pierre Rampal, Aurele Nicolet and James Galway.
David has been on the teaching staff of the RSAMD in Glasgow for more than 25 years, and his pupils have been members of, or have worked regularly with, orchestras from Bournemouth in the South of England, many of the London orchestras, orchestras in Wales, Birmingham and Manchester, and all of the Scottish orchestras.

Activities
After some 26 seasons as Principal Flute with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, working with many of the world's finest musicians, David Nicholson is now devoting his time to recital work, adjudication, master classes and flute pedagogy.
He also specialises in short intensive study period for advanced students, particularly from overseas.
David directs the Edinburgh Flute Course which he founded in 1997, and he is a member of the flute faculty at the 2002 international summer music seminars at the Lake Placid Institute.

Edinburgh Flute Course
The Edinburgh Flute Course runs from Sunday 4th  to Saturday 10th August 2002 and is held at St. Mary's Music School in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Directed by David Nicholson, the Edinburgh Flute Course offers not only daily master classes but also classes dealing with technique, tone development, scales, studies and orchestral extracts.
In addition, there is time for Alexander Technique lessons, ensemble work and special sessions devoted to audition preparation.
There will also be a baroque performance practice class directed by the internationally renowned renaissance and baroque flautist Nancy Hadden, whose course will run concurrently at St. Mary's.
The early dance expert, Steve Player, will give inspiration and guidance, from a dancer's point of view, on playing baroque dance music.

Lake Placid Summer School
With a distinguished international flute-playing faculty, the Lake Placid Flute Seminar comprises traditional master classes with repertoire nominated in advance by each participant, chamber music and individual tutorials.
There is also a series of workshops exploring topics such as:

Recordings
Alongside numerous studio recordings broadcast on national radio, David has performed on a number of  CD recordings.  The most recent of these, where David performs with harpist Elund Pierce, is Music from the North Lands which features the work of a number of contemporary composers including those from Scotland.
