Principal Lecturer in Classical Music at Leeds College of Music, David Fligg offers talks and lectures to arts organisations and music societies throughout the UK . These range from in-depth evaluations of music and musicians, to entertaining and light-hearted talks, music history, appreciation, analysis and composition.
His book 'A Concise Guide to Orchestral Music' was published by Mel Bay Publications.
It is currently available on Amazon.
His current research is on the Moravian-born composer and pianist Gideon Klein who was murdered in Auschwitz shortly after his 26th birthday.  This research has resulted in a number of public lectures and conference papers, including one at the annual conference of the American Musicological Society in San Francisco in November 2011.
Linked to his research, David is organising the Terezin Music Conference at Leeds College of Music in February 2012, which will highlight current research on the music and musicians in the Terezin concentration camp during the Holocaust.  This will also mark the launch of the Terezin Music Hub at the College.  Steered by David, this aims to be the leading centre in the UK for the study of Terezin's musical environment in particular, and creativity in adversity in general.

 

David has given talks to many of the UK 's largest music societies and organisations, including:

  • The European Piano Teachers' Association (EPTA)
Lectures can be tailor-made for specific groups and organisations.

 

David has also been visiting Lecturer for De Montfort University's extra-mural courses, and gives pre-concert talks for the Leeds International Concert Season and for many major orchestras. Recent talks have included those for:
  • The Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra
  • The Halle Orchestra with Radu Lupu
  • The Philharmonia Orchestra
  • The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
David has guest-lectured at:
  • Cambridge 's Fitzwilliam College

As a programme note and sleeve note writer, he has written for concerts given by major orchestras and artists, including:

David has written CD sleeve notes for Chandos Records, including recordings featuring Gennady Rozhdestevensky , Victoria Postnikova and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic.

 

David holds a PhD from the University of Leeds , where he was also an undergraduate, and an M.Mus from the University of London . He also holds a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
His compositions include a Symphony, the chamber opera Esau and Jacob, concertos, and number of chamber works, and since 2004 he has been an adjudicator for the prestigious annual British Composer Awards. 
He is Associate Conductor of the West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra (WYSO), and regularly conducts the Leeds-based Sacred Wing Choir. ecently He recently ran a number of choral workshops,  'Finding our voices', financed through Lottery funding.
