Variations for cello and piano (1966) Duration 8 minutes: Eight variations which grow successively both in length and musical substance from a simple, concise idea. They were written for Donna Magendanz and Piero Guarino who played them for the first time for the Amici della Musica in the Sala delle Colonne, Ca' Giustinian, Venice, Italy, on 6 November 1967. Setting of a text by the Scottish poet Edwin Morgan. It originally formed part of a sequence of pieces relating to water with songs by other Scottish composers. Frances McCafferty and the Chamber Group of Scotland (Tommy Smith, Heather Corbett, Robert Irvine and Graeme McNaught) performed it for the first time in the Stevenson Hall at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama on 15 May 1994.
