| The BIBF was founded in 1994 by David Heyes and now has a membership in 26 countries. It aims to promote the double bass in all aspects of performance, publication and teaching, with the ethos of bringing bassists together and making a difference. A quarterly magazine is sent to members which includes articles, news and reviews, and is an excellent way to keep in touch with bassists throughout the world. |
| The BIBF has an active policy of commissioning news works for double bass each year and hosts a biennial Composition Contest. The 2nd BIBF Composition Contest (2001) attracted 87 entries from 14 countries. |
| Bass-Fest and other residential workshops are organised each year, bringing an international faculty to work with bassists of all ages and abilities. BIBF members receive priority booking and reduced rates. |

| Bass-Fest 2003 is celebration of
the double bass in its many forms and is the ninth annual BIBF residential
workshop. Many aspects of double bass playing will be included in a lively,
stimulating and enthusiastic environment and the course is open to bassists
of all abilities from the age of 11. Emphasis is placed on enjoyment, informality, flexibility of approach and much encouragement. Recitals are held each evening, featuring one or more tutors, and there will be a number of concerts celebrating the music of prominent composers writing for double bass. There are opportunities for participants to take part in solo and ensemble concerts, and to improve technical and ensemble skills during workshops. Individual lessons (not compulsory) are included in the overall fee. Bass-Fest 2003 is a wonderful opportunity to work with leading international soloists and teachers in a relaxed yet stimulating atmosphere.

It is aimed at players/singers,from the age of 11 upwards, who are able to work in a lively, friendly and encouraging atmosphere. There will be many opportunities for solo and ensemble performances and the possibility to work with leading soloists and teachers on a wide variety of technical and musical aspects. Advanced, intermediate and beginner level musicians are welcome and discounts are available for early booking. | SUMMER STRINGS 2003 28-31 August 2003 Wells Cathedral School TUTORS: CATHERINE LORD (Violin) / DAVID HEYES (Double Bass) The 1st Summer Strings will be held at Wells Cathedral School. The four-day workshop will be held in England's smallest city, which enjoys an idyllic setting in the Mendip Hills, giving players an opportunity to work intensively on musical and technical aspects of playing within a relaxed, positive and stimulating environment. There will be opportunities to work regularly with an accompanist, alongside daily performance and technique classes, ending with a final concert on Sunday 31 August at 3.00pm. Solo and ensemble sessions will feature standard and new repertoire and Tony Osborne has been commissioned to write a new work for ensemble violins and basses which will be premiered at the final concert. Many aspects of string playing will be studied, concentrating on tone production, bowing skills and musicality. 10 places are available on each course and players from the age of 13 (all abilities) are welcome. | DOUBLE BASS 2000 is a ten-year project to
commission, perform, publish and record at least 100 new works for
double bass.
The aim is to create a challenging and stimulating repertoire of original works by British composers, or composers resident in Britain, for bassists of all ages and abilities. International composers are included from 2003. Over 40 works have been written to date. |

| Basso! Basso! brings together two
leading international bassists, and together they perform a wide-ranging
and eclectic repertoire spanning over 400 years of musical history.
David Heyes is one of Britain's most high profile bassists. He is the founder of The British and International Bass Forum. David is specialist Double Bass tutor at Wells Cathedral School and the Royal Academy of Music (JD) and works throughout Europe as a soloist and teacher. Peter Leerdam has been a member of the Rotterdam Philharmonic since 1986 and is Double Bass Professor at the Rotterdam Conservatoire. He is one of the most active bassists in the Netherlands and has commissioned many works from Dutch composers. Basso!
